| We are happy to report that the second group of artisans trained and assisted in this project has become independent, and we are now starting another project to help families living in poverty in the Northeast part of Brasil. |
A bit of history
From 2000 to 2004, a group of volunteers led by Ana, Enio and Adriana Beal helped a non-profit institute dedicated to the education, well being and health of 700+ children in Samambaia Sul, Central West, Brazil. The volunteers contributed with work, material and money to build a playroom and a playground for the children, and sponsored many events to entertain and educate the children and provide community services for their families.
With time, the group saw the need to start helping improve the quality of life of these children outside the day care they attended. A project was started with the mothers, who already made artisan work, to enable them to work from home and tender to their children when they are not at school. This was the origin of Hand to Hand.
Volunteer Ana Beal oversaw design and quality control activities, so high-quality products could be made and sold in Brazil and other countries.
